Becoming a flagship esports venue with fit-for-purpose connectivity
Objectives
Orange Business and Cisco design and deploy best-in-class connectivity.
Starting in 2021, Grand Paris Sud began discussions with Orange Innovation teams and Orange Business to translate the community’s ambitions for Les Arènes into technical solutions, with connectivity at the heart of the project. “We chose to implement very robust connectivity to host competitions,” says Lucas Paez, Director of Les Arènes de Grand Paris Sud in Évry‑Courcouronnes.
Orange Business and Cisco built a venue-wide digital infrastructure combining wired, Wi‑Fi, 4G and 5G to deliver ultra‑high performance and secure indoor connectivity for esports. Focus: maximum throughput and minimal latency. Orange Business ensured perimeter cybersecurity, resilience and log management so each player competes in a controlled environment. With Cisco as a single supplier, equipment is unified. A project and technical director ensured interoperability and on‑time delivery.
Transforming the experience for gamers and spectators
“I don’t think there are two venues, in Île-de-France or even in France, that are digitized in this way. It’s a fabulous success,” says Michel Bisson, President of the Grand Paris Sud urban community. From the first competitions in September 2024, players were won over. Les Arènes de Grand Paris Sud has become THE esports venue in Europe—a status owed to a fully reshaped experience for everyone. Spectators feel the same whether they’re in the hall or on the other side of the world. “We were able to achieve this thanks to the new connectivity,” says Frédéric Chaillan. “The outcome is very positive; it was a major investment, so the results had to measure up.” The venue’s director shares this enthusiasm. “We found that esports was a tremendous success,” notes Lucas Paez. “It’s the type of show that gathers the largest audience the fastest.” This momentum now anchors the arena as a source of pride and a showcase for innovation and culture.
It's a winning bet for the urban community. "The approach combines rigorous performance with responsible use, in line with the public education policy known as 'know how to play' promoting balanced, informed practice of esports. That is, learning to engage in gaming and esports responsibly,” says the President of Grand Paris Sud. “This venue inspires and enables us to host global events such as Riot Games events.” It’s a model for combining responsible education and large‑scale events, all within a digital environment that meets expectations.
